I swear that Kenny was one of the last second graders to ride a bike. I tried to teach him a year ago but he had absolutely no interest in it. I told him a few days ago that he was going to learn to do it whether he wanted to or not over Spring Break. And he did. He’s still working on his breaking (as opposed to jumping off his bike) but he’s genuinely enjoying it now.
Luke is riding his bike (with training wheels) now too.
We had Luke’s (last) preschool conference on Monday and it went great.
Here are some of the observations/funny things they told us about:
He and his friend A are joined at the hip, which is not surprising at all.
Part of the conference includes observations done by his teachers. Under the social relations category they had this story:
“Work time – Luke, A, L, A and C are playing “fancy restaurant.” They asked Mrs. D if she wants to come to our fancy restaurant at 1:00. They work together making the food, Shirley Temples, setting the table with a “table sheet”. Luke also said, “I’m the servant, I’m making your salad.”
This one is my favorite by far. They said that Luke doesn’t want to be around conflict. It doesn’t upset him or anything but he just doesn’t want to associate himself with it. They said that if someone is doing something that they shouldn’t be doing, he’ll just get up and walk away. I’m really proud of him for that.
He has a little friend, Addie, that he calls his girlfriend. It’s just really cute.
I feel like I say this all the time but we’re just really sad that we won’t have any more children at our preschool once Luke is done in May.
This just kind of came out of nowhere. As I posted on FB, I was just saying yesterday that I didn’t think Luke was anywhere close to reading. Then tonight he started doing this…
We started out a little worried about Christmas. There was a bad stomach virus going around Kenny’s school that we were praying we wouldn’t get. We really didn’t want a repeat of Christmas 2009. But, of course, Kenny got it on the 22nd. We made it through the 23rd and 24th without anyone else having signs of getting sick so we celebrated with my family on Christmas Eve.
Getting ready for church:
Christmas Eve at my mom and dad’s house:
Christmas morning at our house:
Santa may have forgotten to leave anything in the dogs’ stocking. Oops. We decided it was probably because they have been getting on our couch while we’re gone. Luckily I had two bones for them in the cupboard that we were able to give them.
Christmas morning at my parents:
See the stockings in these pictures? My Grandpa Bill and Grandma Dolly had one made for everyone back when I was little. This year, my mom made ones for Kenny, Luke and Eric so that everyone now has one. It took her a long time and they look great.
Christmas Day with Eric’s mom, Amanda and AJ:
Remember how I said that we thought that we had escaped that stomach virus? I ended up throwing up every hour on the hour Tuesday night and then Eric had a mild form of it. I’m not going to say anything about Luke not getting it because I’m afraid I’ll jinx us:) I’m just glad that it didn’t ruin our Christmas. And I’m really hoping we didn’t pass it on to anyone else in the family.
Some of my friends pinned this on Pinterest. Basically, you ask your children the same 20 questions every year and see how their responses change. Instead of just writing down their answers, I recorded it too so I would have their voices on tape.

Luke’s class had their annual Christmas story today. Luke played the part of a shepherd, like he did last year. I tried to get him to be something different this year, like a wise man or Joseph, but he stuck to his decision. It turned out that none of the boys wanted to be Joseph so one of the girls jumped in and played the part.
I can’t believe this is the last time we’ll have a child in this at our preschool.
