Works-For-Me Wednesday – Kids in Church

            Kids in church

If you’re anything like me, church can be hard with little ones.  Until my son turned 3, my husband and I would take turns taking him to the back of the church, missing the majority of the mass.  We tried so many things to occupy him so we could focus on the service:

-Trucks (can roll a few pews away)

-Crayons (too loud – that is probably NOT a problem for most kids but my son would draw like he was out of control)

-Food (either was gone in a second or too messy)

-Other toys (he would either want us to play or he would get too crazy with them).

-Books worked for a while but they didn’t hold his attention.

And then we found the Crayola Color Wonders.

If you haven’t used them before, they are markers that ONLY draw on the special pages.  We didn’t have to worry about him drawing on anything that he shouldn’t and they’re quiet.  They were our saving grace.  Now that he’s 4 he’s doing much better and is starting to get more out of church but I’m sure we’ll go through the same thing with his 1 year old brother when he gets older.  At least we found something that worked for us.

  1. We are just starting to keep our three year old daughter in the service with us, and she absolutely loves to color. Thanks for the great product tip!

  2. I’ve been making little church bags for the kids so they can bring their own things, I think this would be great.

  3. We’ve always kept all of our children in the service from birth. It’s a bit daunting b/n about 8 months and 18 months, but then they really start to get it. (We do sometimes have to do the hallway thing; walking back and forth with them.) My older kids (5.5, 4.5, 2.5) now make it through the service and my baby’s still doing ok. (She’s 4 months.) Our tricky daughter is 17 months and she likes her Magna Doodle Pro. It’s quiet and great for church… plus it’s not consumable!

that’s a great idea too. we’ll have to try that.

  5. This product is an all time favorite of mine!! Great post!

  6. Neat! My son’s birthday is coming up and this would make a great present.

Those really are great markers. Tip don’t buy the ones that write on the black paper. They are really cool but when you hold the black paper your hands turn black. Not a great invention for kids.

i’m glad you said that….we almost bought the black one last time.
