TMI

You might want to go here and look yourself up.  It doesn’t just have your address and phone number, it also has your likes, children, etc.  Not all of the information is right but it still shared a little too much info for me.  You can go down to the privacy tab at the bottom to have yourself removed.

Car jackings

My MIL sent me this email that was forwarded to her:

Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public
parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the
rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home,
it was a receipt for gas. Luckily my friend told me not to
stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the
car Then we received this email yesterday:

WARNING FROM POLICE

THIS APPLIES TO BOTH WOMEN AND MEN

BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE–
NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)’
Heads up everyone! Please, keep this circulating… You walk
across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You
start the engine and shift into Reverse.
When you look into the rear view mirror to back out of your
parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle
of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your
doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or
whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach
the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out
of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically
mow you down as they speed off in your car.
And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car.
So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your
money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are
now compromised!
BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just
drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you
read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and
family, especially to women. A purse contains all kinds of
personal information and identification documents, and you
certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands.

Stranger danger update

Here’s another update I’ve received on the Lenexa incident.  Hopefully the police are correct and it was just a misunderstanding but you just never know.  It’s always good to warn your kids.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give an update on the incident with Ryan on Monday. A 29 year
old man came forward to the police and said it was him and a buddy. He said
everything happened just as I said it did. The only difference is that he said
had no intention of grabbing my 6 year old. He just wanted his basketball aired
up. The police let him go.

The police then sent out a statement to the schools in the area saying it was a
misunderstanding.

I guess everyone needs to believe what they want. If you believe that two 29
year old men were driving around and they thought it would be a good idea to
approach a small child by himself (who had no air pump anywhere in sight), and
ask him to air up their ball, then it was a misunderstanding. If you find that
story hard to believe, tell your kids to be careful because the 2 men are still
out there.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.

Stranger danger

Here’s an email I received from a woman in my church group.  This happened in the Lenexa area:

I wanted to let everyone I know with small kids in the area what happened to my son today. Ryan is my kindergartener. Around 12:30 today, he was in the front yard playing (we live a mile from Holy Trinity). I was watching him from the window. I saw a green pickup pull up to my driveway, and the passenger throw a basketball out the window. It rolled to Ryan, who picked it up and started walking to the truck. I ran outside and grabbed him when he was right next the the open window of the truck, giving the ball back. The passenger said he just wanted Ryan to air up the ball for him, and then the truck took off.

I called the police, and they searched the area for the truck, but it was gone. It was a newer large green pickup with Missouri plates. The police officer said it was a case of child enticement, and the guy was trying to get Ryan in the truck with them.

Please watch for any suspicious activity in your neighborhood and report it to 911 right away. I feel like they were just driving around, saw Ryan, and tried to get him. I hope and pray that they did not just go on to the next neighborhood.

Please be careful, and talk to your kids about ways strangers try to talk to them.

Alright, stop what you’re doing

Some people are having a hard time w/ the Shutterfly free photo book code.  Rachel tried to do it yesterday but was told that the code was expired.  She emailed them and they sent back a reply saying that the photo books were either 20 or 25% off.

I know this isn’t true b/c I just finished mine this morning and paid $8.60 for the photo book (s&h plus tax).  Plus, when I log into my account, a pop-up usually appears w/ the promo (plus 20% off another photo book).  If you get this pop-up when you log in, you shouldn’t have any problems.  It’s the people who don’t see this pop-up that I’m worried about.

So…I have an email in to Shutterfly to see why this is.  Maybe they’re only giving the discount to certain people, which I hope isn’t the case.  The email didn’t say anything about that.

If you left me an email on the Free Photobook post, I’m going to send you an email so you know.  I don’t want you to spend a lot of time doing a photo book if the discount doesn’t apply to everyone.

I’ll update as soon as I hear back from them.

Thank you Rachel for letting me know!

Creepy guy

I received this email today:

Ladies – this came from a friend of mine and the location is very close
by… just at 91st and Metcalf.  Take care!

Just wanted to give everybody a heads up!  I went to T.J. Maxx today
after playing tennis at Overland Park Racquet Club (OPRC).  When I got out
of my car, I noticed a white truck a couple spaces down.  The man in the
truck smiled at me – this was the ONLY reason I picked up on this.  I
thought it seemed a bit creepy but went on in the store.  I went to the food
section first and as I glanced up, I noticed the man from the truck one
aisle over.  I thought “hmm” so went to the towels to make sure it was just
a coincidence.  As I made my way to several departments, he was always there
at a distance.  I called my Mom first and kept her on the line – she told me
NOT to leave the store without calling security or the police department.  I
finally managed to lose him and saw him leave the store.  I was afraid he
was still in the parking lot and looked out the front windows.  He was
indeed still in the parking lot with engine running.  I confronted the
“security” guy at T.J’s.  He went to check to make sure it was the same
description of the guy I gave him.  He said that the guy was in the truck.
He had moved his truck next to my van going the opposite way so we would be
driver side to driver side.

I think he finally figured out the “security” guy was on to him and
left.  I waited for several minutes and the security guy walked me to the
car.  I don’t know what he was up to, but he was up to something!!!!  An
officer from the Overland Park Police Department came over this evening to
take the report.

SO EVERYONE BE CAREFUL AND BE VERY AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.

It was a White Chevy Truck _ _ _ 433.  The man had dark brown hair,
dark-rimmed glasses, bad complexion and was probably 5’10” or 5’11”.

FOCA

I received this email from one of the women in my church group:

For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) [also know as freedom to kill act] is set to be signed if congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The FOCA is the next sad chapter in the book of abortion. If made a law, virtually all limitations on abortion will be lifted, which will result in the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals would be required to perform abortions upon request. If this were to happen, some U.S. Bishops have indicated they would consider closing down Catholic hospitals rather than perform abortions – more than 30% of all hospitals in the United States are Catholic.

2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.

3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.

4) Parental notification will no longer be required.

5) The number of abortions could increase by as much as 100,000 annually.

Perhaps most importantly the government would then have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (down syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children a woman is allowed to have.

Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.

The Plan :

To say a novena (nine days of prayer ) along with fasting, starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non Catholics, I would ask that you pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for 9 consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast. Just do three things:

1) Forward this letter to other contacts as quickly as possible

2) Start the novena on January 11th and pray for nine consecutive days.

(Please also fast for at least two days during the novena)

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the killing of defenseless children then the time is now to do something about it!

Prayer is something that we all can do, and it is the single best thing that we can do, too!
Please join us in this effort!

Be My Bra

Annie sent me this e-mail:

Here is a link to a petition started by Lifetime TV to support legislation which will require health insurance companies to keep women who have had mastectomies for a minimum 48 hours after surgery.  It just takes a minute to add your name….

There’s a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy.  It’s about eliminating the ‘drive-through’ mastectomy where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctors, still groggy from anesthesia and some times with drainage tubes still attached.

You need not give more than your name, state and zip code.

Here’s the link:

I’d like to take this roof and stick it where the sun don’t shine

I took the boys to the Farmstead this morning.  When we came home we had a business card sticking in our front door.  I pulled it out and it was from the company who is doing our roof with a note on it saying that they’re sorry but they transposed 2 of the numbers in our estimate.  That’s not a good thing.  It is now going to cost us over $700 more then we were quoted on Friday, which is already more then we were quoted in September.  I’m just a little frustrated.  I have now passed this on to Eric to deal with.

Land of Oz

The one thing I hate about KC are the tornadoes.  I’ve never actually seen a tornado (knock on wood) but we always have a few storms in the spring that bring with them tornado warnings and watches.  Our sirens have gone off at least 4 times already tonight.  This is when I hate not having a basement the most.  Our biggest dilemma is whether or not to race to my parents’ house so we can stay in their basement just in case.  I vow that our next house will have a basement.

Good news…they just called off all the tornado warnings although I think there’s another storm system that is coming through late tonight.

Stimulus Economic Refund scam

My mother-in-law e-mailed this to me, which she received from someone else…

Subject: Fwd: 2008 Stimulus Economic Refund scam

spread the word

Very Important!  They’re already getting started…

I just received an email, supposedly from the IRS.gov.  Claiming
that I needed to click on a link and fill out the necessary information
to receive my 2008 Stimulus Economic Refund. Don’t be fooled, it’s looks
legit and very real.   I checked on the IRS.gov site, and they clearly
advise against responding to the email, and against opening the link, as
it may place a virus onto your computer.  They note that the y do not
correspond with anyone via email, and that it’s a scam.  If you should
receive this email, please forward to:   phishing@irs.gov.    Please
pass this on and be aware!!!
